Interested in the MTHS National Honor Society?
Become eligible as a junior!
Here’s what you need to know:
- Remember – for National Honor Society and for life in general, ALWAYS do more than the minimum! Show commitment to the activities you enjoy, but don’t be afraid to try new things. Click here for our bylaws.
- For activities, clubs, and sports, you must earn a minimum of 4 points for each of the years you are in high school. This is a minimum—more is better. Click here for the
points chart to see how many points each activity, club, and sport is worth. Be sure to fully participate in your activity to earn all these points! - You must have 10 total hours of community service MINIMUM to be considered for NHS.
How to earn National Honor Society hours – virtually!
Basic rules of community service for National Honor Society: You must be performing this service for someone outside of your immediate family, where you will not benefit monetarily or otherwise from the service. So, no car washes or snack tables for your organization will count for this. Please check with Mrs. Hogg if you are unsure what to do!
Contact her at [email protected] with any questions.
NOTE: MAKE SURE to keep track of these hours in some way, especially if the app/site does not record this for you. Screenshots of time spent (for sites such as freerice.com) will count as proof!
- Sign up for a free Billion Graves Account. You can either 1.) transcribe gravestones on the site or 2.) take pictures of gravestones in our community. Just make sure you keep track of your hours yourself, since the site doesn’t do that for you!
- Transcribing documents for the Smithsonian
- Charity Miles: Download an app, then run or walk, and this app converts your miles to dollars for the charity you choose.
- An online quiz game that donates grains of rice to the World Food Programme for each answer you get correct. One hour played = one hour of service
- NHS Partnership with DoSomething.org. Once you’ve completed your work on a campaign, you upload a photo, and they send you a digital certificate of completion.
There may be plenty of other opportunities for virtual service. Feel free to find other options. If you are concerned AT ALL whether what you are doing will count, please contact Mrs. Hogg at [email protected].
EXAMPLE
You volunteer for hours at the Cape May County Library, or through Middle Township Recreation Department helping coach a sport, or by working at a Wetlands Festival.
Not sure where to volunteer outside of MTHS? See Mrs. Hogg for ideas! Hours can be earned through school community service activities (Key Club, Red Cross Club, Interact, etc.) Working at a snack stand or a car wash to earn money for trips, etc., does not count as community service.
- Your cumulative GPA must be 3.50 or higher. You will not be eligible unless you meet this academic criteria!
- Character—remember, a National Honor Society student is respectable and tries to
do the right thing at all times. Any discipline you earn in school (detentions, suspensions) CAN count against you. Think twice before saying (or posting online!) something negative. You should be an example to those around you!
