If I join NNDCC, will I have to join the military?
Enrollment in NNDCC is open to all students, not only those interested in joining the military. There is no military obligation after high school graduation, and cadets are not tied to an accession or recruiting program. Students join the program for a variety of reasons. Among the most common reasons are a desire to learn more about themselves, improve self-confidence and self-discipline, participate in various activities offered by the program, be a part of a structured family unit, and/or to see if the military structure is right for them.
What is the difference between NNDCC and NJROTC?
Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) and NNDCC are similar in terms of purpose and mission. NNDCCs teach the NJROTC curriculum and cadets participate in the same competitions, events, and trips as the NJROTCs. Unlike NJROTC programs, NNDCC programs do not receive Department of Defense funding for uniforms or operating expenses. NNDCCs are eligible to become NJROTCs once they have a specific number of cadets enrolled in the program (10% of the school’s population for two consecutive years). The NNDCC was established at Middle Township High School in September 2019. The school’s goal is to develop the NNDCC into an NJROTC over time.
If I am interested in joining the military after high school, what benefits can I gain from NNDCC?
For cadets enrolled in NNDCC who want to join the military, there are some very tangible benefits:

  • Students enlisting after high school graduation are entitled to enter the military at a higher pay grade than other enlistees.
  • Students successfully completing three years of NNDCC are entitled to advanced promotion to pay grade E-3, if they enlist in an active or reserve unit of the Army, Navy, or Air Force, and a pay grade E-2 when enlisting in the Marine Corps.
  • Successfully completing two years of the program enables students to enlist in the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marines at a pay grade E-2.
  • NNDCC participation gives cadets an advantage in obtaining ROTC scholarships as high as $250,000.
  • NNDCC participation gives cadets a competitive advantage when applying to military service academies. The Navy authorizes NNDCC Senior Naval Science Instructors to nominate three cadets each year for the U.S. Naval Academy.
Do cadets wear a uniform?
Yes. Cadets wear their uniform to school once a week and are inspected during class. All cadets receive the Navy Service Uniform at no cost. In addition, cadets in leadership positions are issued the Service Dress Blue uniform at no cost. Cadets understand it is an honor to wear the uniform. The uniforms are the property of the U.S. Navy, and must be taken care of and returned upon completion of the program.
Is the NNDCC Instructor in the military?
No. NNDCC Instructors  are veteran military officers or veteran senior non-commissioned officers. They are not recruiters. They are certified by the U.S. Navy to teach NNDCC, but they are hired as high school faculty members like all other teachers.
Do I receive academic credit for joining NNDCC?
Yes. Cadet Physical Education courses and Naval Science courses carry full elective credit towards graduation.
If I join NNDCC, can I still participate in varsity sports, band, drama, or other activities?
Yes. NNDCC cadets are strongly encouraged to participate in other extracurricular activities. Cadets also are encouraged to support their fellow cadets by attending shipmates’ sporting events and performances. When possible, NNDCC practices and events are scheduled so as not to conflict with other practices and meetings.
How much time will I need to dedicate toward NNDCC?
Outside of classes, NNDCC takes as much or as little time as the cadet chooses. Participation in the NNDCC Drill Team, Color Guard, Orienteering Team, CyberPatriot Team, Academic Team, Civil Air Patrol, parades, field trips, and events are optional.
Do cadets have to have short hair?
Yes. Male cadets’ hair must be neat, clean, trimmed, and meet minimum standards to not discredit the uniform. Minimum standards are:

  • tapered upwards ¾ inch and outward not greater than ¾ inch
  • must not touch collar or ears
  • no longer than 4 inches
  • bulk not to exceed 2 inches

Some of the extracurricular teams may have their own stricter requirements for competitions, but participation on those teams and meeting their own stricter requirements for competitions are optional.

Donations offset the costs of cadet uniforms, drill equipment, annual awards, and field trips to military installations, competitions and team-building events.
